About the site

Normanton is home to our head office and is also the largest of our operational sites where we pack fresh fruit, salad and vegetables.

Several of our support functions are based here as well as the majority of our Commercial and buying teams. Our pack house is in operation 24 hours a day and 364 days a year, employing over 700 colleagues. We offer a broad range of roles based at site from Production Operatives to Technical Managers, Business Unit Administrators to IT Specialists.

About the role

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Category Technical Manager to support and influence the Produce business, and ensure that a balanced technical argument is incorporated into the category decision-making process, specifications are fit for purpose and implemented with ease.

Main responsibilities;

  • Management of ASDA/IPL specifications and communication to the business/supply base ensuring quality goods are delivered to customer.
  • On-boarding and maintaining due diligence controls of our suppliers, and auditing requirements.
  • Interaction with QA teams in ASDA depot and IPL packing sites to ensure specifications are correctly implemented.
  • Use of customer feedback, data management and trend analysis to enable implementation of corrective actions relating to IPL agreed technical KPI’s.
  • Influencing buying decisions in relation to supplier selection and supply calendar, to ensure the best products at the best price are always available for our customers.
  • Accountable for delivering the new product and variety plan in line with the retail teams requirements.
  • Supporting the GNFR team to deliver practical solutions within our supplier base for the reduction and/or removal of single use plastics, supporting ASDA’s publically made commitments in relation to packaging.
  • Keeping up to date with industry issues and factors that could potentially affect product safety, quality, legality, integrity or availability, and putting actions in place to mitigate the impact on IPL/ASDA products.
  • Supporting our Responsible Sourcing objectives and commitments, being the eyes and ears within our supplier base, helping our suppliers to deliver initiatives that support our commitments, and where applicable engaging with NGO’s and Govt. organisations.
  • Managing our technologist / technical administrator colleagues, developing their skills and experience to ensure we have robust succession plans.
  • Visit Asda stores regularly to monitor store quality, see how our products are performing, engaging with our store colleagues.

This is a full time role with the hours of 8:30am – 5pm, Monday – Friday.

Hybrid working is available and offsite/supplier visits will be required on a weekly basis.

What are we looking for?

With significant experience in technical role within a food business, ideally with fresh produce experience, you should have experience and confidence in auditing third party vendors and conducting internal audits.

With the ability to translate technical issues into easily understood language you should be a problem solver and have confidence in front of opposition. Highly logical and an evidence led approach you should have good influencing skills.

You should have HACCP Level 3 and internal auditing/BRC training and Lead Assessor experience.
